I was reading this article by Hutch Carpenter on why professionals should continue to blog in the era of Twitter (thanks @problogger), and I was thinking, “What? Me? Not blog because of Twitter? Nah. Never happen.” Then I realized my last blog post was nearly two weeks ago. Approximately when I became addicted to Twitter. Strange coincidence.
So what is it that draws me to Twitter? Is it the ease at which I can find interesting people and they can find me? Yes. That’s it right there. It’s SUCH instant gratification to follow someone and then 5 minutes later find out that they think you are somewhat interesting. With blogs, you just never know. You like to think you are witty, insightful, ingenius, et al, but you just never know.
But I like to tweet. It is now such an extension of what I do here that I just don’t want to do without it. But I will have to remember the words of Hutch Carpenter: “There’s no replacing the permanence or deeper thinking that blogs provide.” That’s deep, folks.

Glad you enjoyed the post. I share your feelings about Twitter. It’s almost seductive, a simple tweet here, a tweet there. Someone @replies and before you know it you’re a twitterer, not a blogger.
The two activities really complement one another. I think there’s probably a navy analogy of blogs as the aircraft carrier, tweets as the little support ships. Gotta work on that one…
Great blog! I’m checking out your Productivity posts.
Thanks for commenting, Hutch! Oh I know it, those @replies are like darling little nuggets of happiness. They pull you in and before you know it, you’re swimming with the sharks. Or flying with the birds. Or something.
Twitter has definitely changed the way I view the entire online community. I’m so glad it exists, and I hope it always will. Oh yes, and long live the blog!
Some people say, “You want to talk to people, instead of talk at people”. Well, I’ve always said, it’s perfectly okay to talk @ people on Twitter!
Oh yeah, look what Twitter is doing to you. Where’s all the deep thinking, eh? So much for philosophy…
Oh I know. Twitter kicked philosophy out the window. And you always call me out on it. Dang. Nothing gets by unnoticed anymore.
Meeting interesting people by accident in 5 seconds – that’s the hook. Engaging with people that might just be as bizarre as me 10 seconds later – that’s the line and sinker.
You should have heard me a year ago with my employees in the office who used Twitter. “Isn’t that that stupid thing where you tell people when you’re eating a sandwich and taking a…”
I now have 2,300 tweets and I just did one about dunking my robe belt in the toilet.
Karma.
That’s hilarious, Dave. See? I find dunking your robe belt in the toilet a highly interesting topic!
