JellyTelly…A reason to be excited about a site that's "under construction"

Kelvin Kao recently blogged about JellyTelly, a new website coming this fall that is geared toward kids. It’s being created by Phil Vischer, the mastermind behind VeggieTales. Since leaving VeggieTales behind, he started Jellyfish Labs, which is the media company behind one of my son’s current favorite books, 47 Beavers on the Big Blue Sea.

I cannot wait for this site to come out. Why? Because it’s competition for Nick, Jr. and Playhouse Disney Online, for one thing. My son is three years old and can already navigate around those sites with complete ease. It would be great if he was surfing around on a site that was fun AND spiritually significant.

And I love the monetization model (aka: how they make money.) Instead of filling the site up with ads or charging a flat fee, they are going to give parents a month free and then ask THEM to come up with a subscription price. I think that’s totally cool.

Beyond that, the design looks like it will be a zillion times better than the competition. So of course I’m in love. I signed up for the newsletter, so hopefully I’ll be first in line when it launches.
